Smith Hewitt a young lad of nineteen enlisted in the New York Volunteer Army along with many of his friends in the community of
Hebron, New York. He reported to Company E Recuritment House in New Hartford, New York.
Company E was part of the 123rd New York Volunteer Infrantry.
Records show he died on December 18 th 1962 in the army Hosbital at
Harpers Ferry, West Virginia on December 18 1862 He was one one of 300,000 men who died of various dieases during the war both on and off the battle field.
The hostibal at Harper's Ferry was one of the largest and finest military hostibals of it's time.
More than likely Smith never saw actually conflict. His brother Sidney Hewitt of Peble Colunty, Ohio served
with the Ohio 54th Voluntary Infantry.
The 123rd served throughout the war starting with The Campaign of Chancellorsville,skirmish near Fredericksburg.
The Battle of Chancellorsville and then the march to Gettysburg. After Gettysburg the unit was sent to the west, including stops in Tennessee. !864 find the 123rd marching to Altanta starting with Resaca, Cassville,
Pumpkin-Vine Creek, Pine Hill,Kulp's Farm then onto Kennesaw. The unit conyinue on to Peach-Tree Creek then into Atlanta.
After Altanta "The March to the Sea" began then into Savannah. Up the seaboard, passing through Columbia, South Carolina. On into North Carolina stops at Bentonville,Goldsboro, Moccasin Swamp, finally into Raleigh.
